Been a busy few months

We have been very busy around here. We suffered some losses such as one our little handicap boys, Hopper. We have taken in a few extra faces as well but we also placed some girls and boys in some very loving homes.

We took in 6 girls from a shelter in Indiana. 4 were dropped off in an overnight box and the others were surrendered by the owner who loves them so much. 3 of the girls have been adopted out since then and are in amazing homes. Some of these girls we will miss as we do all of the ones who come visit us while they wait for their forever homes.

We took in 4 girls who were living in the worst cage I have seen. No food bowls or food and the water bottle was stained with a horrible brown stain. The girls are healthy and happy now and awaiting homes.

We also took in a boy and girl Pip and Squeak. They were meant to be feeder breeder by a minor but when that didnt happen probably due to age of the rats they handed them off to a snake owner who snake couldn't eat them. So they came to me. One emergency spay later and they are now safe. Little things like this is what really does a rescue in. It is these emergencies that come in and move above the other rats that are in line for surgeries. Both of these are proving to happy rats regardless of their past and are up for adoption.

We found another person with 5 rats in a tank. Not a suitable living situation for one let alone 5. To make matters worse, 3 were boys and 2 were girls. Luckily I have seen signs of heat cycles on the girls so they are not pregnant. They are living in a cage with each other while the 3 boys are living in another cage. The girls are great. Their little personalities are shining and will be amazing pets for someone. They wont be listed on adoptions sites for a few weeks because I want to make sure they are not pregnant.  Daddy and the boys need work. Daddy does not trust people much but he is very eager to try. The boys are just skittish and scared. Daddy will most likely be neutered so he can be adoptable once we get them to healthy weights. Daddy weighs about 339g when he came in and he is at least 200g underweight.

We have tumors to remove, tooth abscesses, heart problems, Chronic uris and so many more things with some of our rats that we are constantly medicating, running to the vets office and worrying about one or the other.  Our lifers break our heart when they leave us. Even though they came in to be adopted they found a home with us. We have some girls who have bitten me for 1.5years now. Obviously those cannot be adopted out but I leave them here and we care for them deeply. Some of our rats we have to love from afar but most will love us back. For our special biter rats they may not like us but they know when dinner time is and they usually always love other rats so they are happy in their own way.

We spend a lot of time on these rats. I go to work for 10 hours and some days the rest of my evening is filled with rat cage cleaning, medicating, socializing, going over adoption applications and so on. We have a list of rats we medicate twice a day. We have ones who need more loving than others to make them home ready for their next journey in life and we spend hours on the road either picking up or going to the vets office.

We have received some random donations this month and I cannot thank these individuals enough.  We have a tough fight on our hands balance the vet bills and food bills and we are still working on the $850.00 for the filing fee for the 501(c)3. I am not sure that we will ever manage to get those funds up but I can hope that we can.  I remember wanting to start a rescue but wasn't sure If I could adopt any out. Just about 50 adopted animals later and we are adopting them out to amazing homes.  It has been a rough road though but one I would travel many times again. I may not be changing the world but I can give you 100 eyes of the lives I have changed and is more than I can say for a lot of individuals.

We take in rats that really touch our hearts. Some for a short time, some for a long time. Lately we have been losing some older rats that we adopted 2 year ago. All are aging and leaving us.  Some of the lifers that come here are only here for a while. When that is the case it makes it harder to lose them. We just break the barrier of rat vs human and then it is time for them to go. Karl was with us for a few short months and lost his battle.  Goldie was the same story.  Both left us way to soon.
Sometimes I look at these faces and I wonder how they ended up being the most disposable small animal. I see it all the time about individuals giving their rats back because it didn't work out as planned. They grow bored while the rats sit neglected and starving for food and attention.  The excuses are unnerving to say the least. I am pregnant I cannot keep the rat. I am moving, I cannot take the rats. He is mean, I cannot keep the rat. Just so many excuses.
I can understand allergies and so on but for some of these reasons people chose to dump their animals it just breaks my heart.  You loved that animal enough to take it home, how did you stop loving it 6 months later? He was mean so you gave him  up? A neuter will solve that problem and make him a happy rat.
I have seen rats in horrible condition in my rescue or in my friends rescues. Sick, huge tumors, starving, living in fiflth, living as a baby making machine and so on.  It is never ending. I know the ones I take in and adopt out are in good homes. The constant updates and emails I see keeps me going.  It gets sad to hear how animals are just being left, left outside, left in shelters, left to fend for themselves. I know it isn't just rats but it is all sorts of animals. I just wonder if rescues will ever make a difference or if we will just keep taking in peoples so called problems.
I love these little rodents. I find them entertaining even if I am just sitting on the couch watching tv or on my ipad, I have someone out with us.  I just wish people would understand they are not disposable, or baby making machines.

Happy Birthday Roly Poly Bubs.

I have had a ton of rats but none have been as special as watching these guys here.

Grace's babies were born on december 20th,2012 7 babies. Roo, Liam, Willow and Hippo were born to this litter.
Faiths babies are our christmas eve babies.  11 babies born.
Noel's babies were born on December 28th, 2012  8 babies, Lily, Hopper, Barrett, and Turtle were born to this litter

On December 28th 2012 Noel was set for a emergency spay when my tears the whole way and my vets refusal to do it with her being that full term. Partially I think he knew I could not live with it and that was all I needed to hear honestly. She had her babies that night. I didnt want 3 litters but she was full term and it really drove me nuts to think of what i was doing.  8 babies were born but 2 passed away early on. Our little Barrett who we fought to save and just couldnt. I am so glad that he didnt do it because we gained our 3 babies hopper, lily, turtle from this litter.

It was apparent early on that something was wrong.

The beat the odds and made it to a year with little or no problems.  Just minor birth defect issues such as the boys have their willies stuck out all the time but they keep it clean so i dont have to do anything with it anymore. They pull them back in on occasion but not for long.

So happy birthday to my wee ones and to Hippo, and to the ones dsptch911 has :)

Here is to hoping we make it to two :)

It has been a busy few months here. We recently took in a momma rat and her babies who are up for adoption. After that we took in some hamsters who were all living together in small cages with males and females in the same cages.  Momma is mean and not happy here at all. She is stressed with the other animal smells. I may have to find a foster house for her to see if her stress levels will go down. I also have taken in boys who are the worst biters I have ever seen. I am pretty sure they will require some neuters. I picked up 3 boys who come to find out had a horrible diet and they needed a better one which we gave them. I have a few adoptables and a bunch of them that will probably just live their life out with me. When you rescue it isnt just taking them in and re-homing them. A majority will live their life with you. I love doing this but some days it is hard to see how many people just toss ani

Far to often this is what a rescue will find. This little girl was going to be set free outside. A woman took her in but the tumors were more than she could handle. So she found her way to me. She gained a name here "Athena" One strong enough to help her through this horrible tumor ordeal.  The former owners did not want to care for her so she is now in my care. She will see a vet on Saturday morning to see about having these tumors removed. The problem is when rescues take in your unwanted animals we bear the cost to help them survive. So remember that the next time you feel the need to get a new pet, support a rescue and safe a life.

Happy 6 Months old to the Roly Poly Bubs!

The babies have made it to 6 months old. I remember when I first seen something was wrong with them, I wondered if they would make it that long. Here we are.  We had some recent issues with urine scald from how they go potty but we have found a way to combat that and now they are doing a lot better. I had to invest in some vet bedding to keep their bottoms dry. If you haven't heard about this stuff go check it out. I am so in love with it. It is like having carpet in the rat cages.
They are so much fun to hang out with. Roo and Hopper are my little cuddle bugs, those boys love to just hang out, curl up next to you and sleep. Willow is my little police rat. She has to be on the look out for other rats smells and puffs up when she finds them. My little Liam, Lily and Turtle just enjoy being out, nothing major with them. They will come say hi, popcorn away and then find a place to nap.
After six months of living with them. I am still amazed at how they manage to get around, run on the wheel and how they can still climb up stuff. Just amazing little ratties. I am so blessed that they found me to live with.

Roly Poly Babies

In December of 2012 we took in 3 mommas and the daddy. Shortly after all the mommas had babies we noticed something was wrong with the little ones. They seem to be born with a curved spine. For unknown reasons. They are very healthy and happy otherwise. These babies have no idea they are different. They still run on the wheel, climb the bars, and popcorn in their own special way. We have had to purchase new cages for them so they could live together since living with normal rats was just to much for them. 3 boys and 3 girls  remain living with me. All of them are amazing little souls. Sadly we have no idea how long their life with be but we plan on loving them as long as we can. It has been a lot of work to adjust and care for them daily. They require special attention since the boys have some minor issues with their male parts. You can see their videos and antics on our You Tube channel. http://www.youtube.com/user/TheHopefloats75?feature=mhee

Keeping same sex rats together.

It makes me completely furious when I see an "owner" who has males and females together. I recently seen an ad on cl and they showed 4 females with 3 males in a tank with a topper. That is hardly big enough for one rat, let alone 7.  I am concerned how they will cope with so many babies. It is beyond me how one can think this is acceptable. It is not a secret that males and females will reproduce. It is just beyond me how they can sit here and not even think about that.

Who am I?

I started out with pet rats in Spring of 2010. Currently we have our own colonies of pet rats that live in a very well set up rat room in which they can free range for hours at a time. I enjoy having rats as pets and I cannot imagine my life without them in it. Over the years I have taken in babies, grouchy boys, females who were set to death and numerous other rats. I have a love for these little guys and It just breaks my heart to see how little they mean to others.  I have an amazing vet office Kryder Veterinary Clinic who keeps my wee ones healthy and gives them the longest life possible.

Recently I was contacted about a momma and her 7 babies and 3 boys in a tank. I went and picked them up. Upon arrival I found out it was one male who had lived with 3 females. The second litter was born here on December 23, 2012 and the 24th.  We are currently seeking homes for these guys, the little boy that came with them, and another boy who was given to me by a family member when their snake would not eat it.
